Jesus tells another parable about a landowner who planted a vineyard. He leases the land to tenants and then sends slaves to collect the produce from the land. The tenants kill the slaves so the land owner sends his own son. The tenants even kill the owner's son. Consequently, the owner will judge the tenants and give the land to another group of tenants.
This parable was a judgment against the religious leaders of Jesus' day. The calling of the tenants was to work the vineyard and produce fruit. The religious leaders were not producing fruit of the Kingdom of God. Instead they were jealous of the authority Jesus had.
The easiest thing to distract us from our work is jealousy of others. Ultimately, being jealous of others is the same as being jealous of God since God is the Author of anything good in others. Consequently, we either try to take the good in others or we try to purchase love for attention. Ironically, this is the very thing that offended the religious leaders that tax collecters (thieves) and prostitutes (selling themselves for love) would enter the Kingdom of Heaven before them. The difference is we must admit our need for a Savior and not justify ourselves.
We cannot purchase our salvation nor does comparing ourselves to others help our situation. Instead, Christ inverts the script and purchases us with His sacrifice and then we become His inheritance!
