Jesus disputes with the religious leaders' teaching that it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but rather it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles. His focus is that our religious deeds do not make us more holy. In fact, counting on religion leads to false piety.

Jesus then left and went to a non-Jewish region where a woman begged Jesus to heal her daughter. Jesus did an odd thing and did not answer her at all. After the disciples asked Him to send her away (or heal the daughter), He states that He was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel. She continues to beg for help and even humbly disputes with His logic. Jesus ends up healing her daughter.

No matter how this passage is interpreted, we can definitely see that Jesus does not behave under our conventions or expectations. His purposes are greater than our understanding.

The woman came humbly to Jesus. Humility is not the same as shame. Humility has nothing to hide. Shame hides consequences. There's also nothing to be offended about when you are humble. This woman definitely came humbly for she was not offended at the comments made.

People who come to Jesus who think they deserve a blessing will be offended by the blessing. If you think you deserve anything from God, then if He gives it to you, then you will be offended when God gives a blessing to others whom you think do not deserve the blessing!

Ultimately, Jesus healed the daughter. This means that He categorically describes the woman as one of the lost sheep of Israel He was sent to. Jesus saves that which is lost....but until we come in humility, we cannot be saved.
