Jesus sent the disciples on to cross the sea while He went up the mountain to pray. While the disciples were in the middle of the sea, a storm arose and the waves started tormenting the boat. It was Jesus who commanded them to go into the storm. Likewise, sometimes we are made to go into the storm's of life and like the disciples, we feel that Jesus is absent.

Jesus walks on the water during the storm. His appearance cause the disciples to be even more afraid because they think He is a ghost! Jesus assures them "Take heart, it is I, do not be afraid!" Even in the midst of our storms, Jesus assures us that He is in control of the situation.

Peter asks Jesus, "If it is you, call me to come out!" The entire experience of walking on water was meant to show the disciples that Jesus is one with the Creator of the universe (see Job 9:8). Peter sounds like Satan when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness: "if you are the Son of God..." Jesus does not get bothered, but tells Peter to come. Peter does make a few steps but he begins to sink. We should learn from Peter: Do not test God! The only outcome is you will sink!

Jesus immediately rescues Peter. The message of this story is not try harder or even "keep your eyes on Jesus". But rather, the lesson is "Lord, save me!" to realize only Jesus is the Savior of all.

Jesus knew His disciples needed this lesson. They were all supposed to stay on the boat. Peter tested Jesus and he sinks when he is on his own. Ultimately, Jesus taught the disciples a monumental lesson. Some lessons cannot be learned by lecture or watching others...some lessons must only be learned through struggling in the storm.
